The San Marcos River

Crystal clear water bubbles up from the San Marcos Spring in the quiet community of San Marcos. This area is said to be among one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Northern Hemisphere. Early cultures in the area date back to over 10,000 years. The springs continue to draw crowds with the San Marcos river being over run by "toobers" trying to beat the summer heat. As you leave town the river quiets down and you find yourself in the middle of farm land. Bald Cypress and Burr Oaks clutter the banks, and the Elephant Ears and Water Hyacinths provide an almost "jungle-like" atmosphere.

At approximately 72 degrees from the mouth of the spring, this river is a perfect year round fishery. Big bass are the prize of the San Marcos. The clear waters provide us with the opportunity to sight cast to record sized Largemouth and Smallmouth bass. There is nothing like seeing a fish in the water, but seeing it inhale your fly will almost make you forget to set the hook! Call now to get into some record bass action!

Other Hill Country favorites can be found in these waters, as well, including Guadalupe bass, Bluegills, and the Rio Grande Cichlid, Texas's only native Cichlid.

The San Marcos is best approached by floating. There is very little access in the prime fishing areas and the river bed doesn't lend itself to easy wading.
