Why Hell 'N Back?
There are several origins to the name of my guide service. The easiest explanation is a simple paraphrasing of an old time analogy. The old saying of going to Hell and back usually described someone's willingness to face hardships in the ultimate search for something greater. It expresses a sense of accomplishment, that you have bested the worst, and have now come full circle. I use it to describe my personal endeavor of starting a fly fishing guide service. I have jumped through many hoops and faced some unforeseen adversaries to get this thing running. I feel as though I have been to "hell n back".
The only other origin is strictly geographical, but very instrumental in the final decision of the name. It all started when my wife and I moved to the quaint little town of Wimberley. I was drawn to Wimberley immediately because the Blanco river runs right through town, as well as the relative location to other fine Hill Country rivers. This was my home base for all future fly fishing endeavors. I went to the town library to look for old almanacs, history of the town, and any information on fishing the Blanco river, particularly information on fly fishing the river. What I found was not a whole lot of info about fishing the Blanco, but instead, stumbled across a collection of ghost stories that take place on the Devil's Backbone. The Devil's Backbone is a geological uplift of limestone, just outside of Wimberley, with soaring peaks and ridges. It hugs the Blanco River for several miles and forms the southern rim of the Wimberley valley. From a distance it has the appearance of a very crooked and jagged backbone rising from the earth. Hwy 32 runs the length of "the Backbone", and one look into one of the canyons shooting off the main ridge will give you a good idea of it's rugged, unforgiving terrain. In the book, the author, a Wimberley resident, shares first hand telling's of those who have witnessed things they cannot explain. Residents along the Backbone tell of seeing a Lipan Apache warrior riding across a ridge line with a fresh collection of scalps. When approached the Indian warrior turns to face them and vanishes in thin air. Another tale is of a woman who is forever lost in one of the deep canyons. Legend says she is looking for her child who wandered away from the group of settlers that were moving into the valley. The woman can be seen walking in the deep arroyos dressed in clothing from a time when this land was a very hostile place. There were stories of people who met a grisly death in this menacing landscape. Tales of banditos and outlaws, long forgotten gold stashes, and bloody shootouts. All in all, the tales all had a common thread of macabre and an ominous presence.
The curious side of me always wonders how the roads and landmarks of this area got their names. Are some of those old ghost stories true? Purgatory Rd., The Devil's Backbone, Devil's Hollow, Eden's Ranch; these are all roads that I take on a daily basis or landmarks that I fish and guide near. It's this mysticism that led me to the name Hell 'N Back Outfitters. For me, it portrays my willingness to do whatever it takes to make my customers happy!
